Rowing – Origin

Rowing is a sport in which athletes race against each other on rivers, on lakes or on the ocean, depending upon the type of race and the discipline. The boats are propelled by the reaction forces on the oar blades as they are pushed against the water.Although no one knows for sure which race were the first to make use of rowing it is generally accepted that the ancient Egyptians were the first to build rowboats. The ancient Romans prepared rowing regattas for entertainment, whereas in Greece it was more common to use boats to wage war. The origin of rowing stems back to old England. In times of old, when there were very few bridges over the River Thames and they were separated by long distances, the only possible means of reaching the opposite shore was to use a rowing boat. As it could be a tedious journey from one shore to the other, passengers started to place bets on who would be first. By the middle of the 19th century rowing had become very popular in England and America. At that time big stakes were set and rowers could win impressive monetary prizes.
